Muthahi became the fifth Member of Parliament (MP) for Mukurweini Constituency, Nyeri county (2002 to 2007).
He was also the chair of Parliamentary Committee on finance, planning, tourism & trade.
Later, he was appointed to serve as the Minister for Information and Communications. Mutahi became the first Senator of Nyeri county under the Jubilee political party (2013-2017).
While he served as a cabinet minister he did several notable works including the first Fibre Optic Project for East Africa.

He is married to Anne Wanjiku Mutahi. She is the daughter of the late Cabinet Minister, John Michuki.
Anne is also a special advisor to President Uhuru Kenyatta on matters about Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
