African swine fever hits Eastern Cape

There has been an outbreak of the African swine fever in the Amathole District in the Eastern Cape.

The virus has been detected for the first time in three years in the province.

The Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Department said investigations and post-mortems are underway in the villages where about 50 pigs died.

The villages have now been quarantined and no pigs are allowed to move in or out of the affected areas.

African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that kills almost all infected pigs.

It’s not regarded as a risk to people and isn’t a public health threat. Gauteng authorities are warning farmers of this outbreak of African swine fever.

In April, Daveyton informal pig farmers reported the unusual deaths of pigs brought in from Mpumalanga.

More outbreaks were reported in May, in Vanderbijlpark.

The department is encouraging farmers to take precautionary measures.

This includes not feeding pigs leftover food and not buying pigs of unknown origin.
