Golden Arrow Bus Services is being accused of abuse of power. Numsa and the Transport & Omnibus Workers Union say the company changed its conditions of employment in August without consulting unions.
The unions claim the changes were done to reduce workers’ salaries and increase those of management and they are planning more protest action.
Meanwhile, Golden Arrow has requested an interdict to stop the ongoing protests, which are set to continue until next week.
Unions say workers are fed up with not being consulted when important decisions are made.
“They want to maximise profit in order to give their directors more increases,” said Vuyo Lufele, Numsa regional secretary.
“The directors are earning millions per year and now they are going to earn more because they are cutting on workers’ wages to cut about R27-million per year. The bus company says around 300 workers have been retrenched.
e are only now returning to 60 percent of our passengers pre-COVID. We had to cut a number of busses we had to cut that by around 200 busses every single day and so, unfortunately, we did take the difficult decision to have retrenchments,” said Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer.
Golden Arrow Bus Services have been around for nearly 160-years. It hopes that these changes will help them be in business for much longer.
