Zandspruit informal settlement is struggling with illegal electricity connections.
Besides them causing power outages, they are also costing lives. Three children have died in the area after stepping on illegal connections. Another child is in a critical condition in hospital.
According to City Power’s Isaac Mangena, they cannot electrify the area legally until the human settlements department proclaims that land.
The land on which the settlement is situated is, according to City Power, privately owned land and they can not do much until government buys the land.
“The is a process where the City is pushing those responsible for human settlement to ensure that they rezone the are for people to reside on it,” Mangena said.
This will ensure that services such as electricity and water are brought to the area.
