Over 14,000 new COVID-19 cases recorded in SA

South Africa has recorded its highest ever daily increase in COVID-19 infections. A worrying 14,046 new infections have been recorded in the past 24-hour cycle.

The total number of infections has now climbed to 954, 258. There have been 411 new COVID-19 related deaths reported in the country.

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, says the department will be reviewing restrictions to curb the rapid spread.

Mkhize also says the second wave is spreading much faster and will surpass the peak of the first wave in the coming days.

“This indicates that the virus continues to spread exponentially- indeed the rate of spread is much faster than the first wave and we will surpass the peak of the first wave in the coming days,” Mkhize said.

“We must warn South Africans that we will need to review the current restrictions and consider further measures to ensure that we curb this alarming rate of spread. All provinces except the Eastern Cape reported increases.
