Residents of Wentworth, Durban have raised safety concerns after an explosion at an Engen refinery. They say there is no emergency evacuation plan for the area, while Engen says that is not its sole responsibility.
An independent investigation into the explosion is underway.
Seven people were rushed to the hospital on Friday morning.
Three others were injured when a nearby block of flats also caught fire.
Recently, reports surfaced of a possible closure of the refinery.
Provincial Environmental Affairs MEC Ravi Pillay says that is a decision for the investors and owners.
“We would want to be part of those particular discussions, and we, as a provincial government, are going to follow that up.”
Engen has promised to assist the displaced families.
