Garden Route ready for possible Covid-19 third wave

Health workers along the Garden Route say they’re ready for a possible third coronavirus wave.

The Western Cape Health Department says preparations are in place if it hits the province in May.

The Garden Route was one of the first areas to experience the second wave.

This had a wide-scale detrimental impact on its tourism and hospitality sectors over the December holiday period.

Co-chair of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19, Professor Salim Abdool Karim says it will likely hit at the beginning of winter.

And, he says the time to begin planning for it, is now.

The second batch of vaccines is reserved for frontline healthcare workers.

The single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been shown to be 82 per cent effective in preventing severe illness from the coronavirus variant first discovered in South Africa.
