“Buya sbali, you are the only one who can give us closure over our sister’s death.”
These were the words of Mapaseka Mondlane (27) from Duduza, Ekurhuleni.
She told the publication that her sbali had been on the run since her five-month pregnant cousin Fatima and nephew Nyiko died in a shack fire on Monday, 26 April. She said they were called by neighbours saying her cousin was in hospital after suffering burn wounds.
“We went to their shack on Tuesday, and nothing was saved from the fire. When I went to the hospital, I found out that she had died on arrival,” said Mapaseka.
“We need answers. Her husband was the last person who saw my cousin. We don’t understand how they could burn inside a shack when they were not asleep.”
Mapaseka said the family was told the couple had a fight, and one of them started the fire.
Fatima’s other cousin, Joaquim Mondlane, said: “The worst thing is we don’t know how we will bury them. We hope someone will assist us.”
Saki Langa (32) was one of the last people who saw Fatima alive.
“Our shacks were next to each other. They both burnt to ashes. We couldn’t save a thing,” she said.
Saki said she was asleep when she was woken by the husband, calling to say the shack was burning.
“When I came out, Fatima was burning and rolling on the ground,” she said.
Saki said she tried to help, but she realised the fire had spread to her shack.
She went to save her two kids. She said she needed help with school uniform for her nine-year-old son.
The SunTeam learnt that Fatima and her husband had a fight a few days before the fire. It led to her staying with her family. The day before the fire, she returned home after he pleaded with her.
It’s alleged that Fatima burnt her husband’s clothes after a fight, which caused the fire. The husband apparently ran away from the scene, saying he had no reason to live with his wife and child dead.
Gauteng police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo said an inquest docket was opened.
