Thuso Mbedu (born 8 July 1991 in Pietermaritzburg) is a South African actress. The award-winning actress is popular both on the local and international scene.

Appearing in many television soap operas has gained the actress popularity. She played the role of Nosisa in Isibaya, Kitsao Medupe in Scandal, and Boni Khumalo in Saint and Sinners.

In 2021, she played the starring role in the Amazon Video limited series The Underground Railroad.

Background

The fan-favorite actress was born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on 8 July 1991.

Thuso Mbedu (29) grew up under the care of her grandmother, she lost her mother, Gladness, to a brain tumor when she was four years old.

Before she was born, her parents had separated, her grandmother Thokozile was responsible for taking care of her. Thuso had no relationship with her dad until the death of her mother.

Her father and grandmother passed on in 2012 and 2013 respectively. She is close to her sibling Nomalungelo Mbedu (sister).

Education

She built the foundation of her academic pursuit at Pelham Primary School. Furthering her studies, she proceeded to Pietermaritzburg Girls High School.

When she was 18, she enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand. In the institution, she studied for Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management. She graduated from Wits University in 2013 with Honors.

In 2012, she underwent a two-month training at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, New York City.

Career

In August 2014, she made her debut appearance on the screen. She was cast as Boni Khumalo, a major recurring role, in Saint and Sinners, an Mzansi Magic drama series.

Still, in 2014, she landed another role in season two of Isibaya. Thuso played a small recurring role in the Mzansi Magic soap opera. After which, the role of Kitso on Scandal!

In September 2015, she appeared as a guest on an episode of Katch It with Khanyi, an e.tv talk show.

In the following month, she was cast as Kethi, a guest role, in season 2 of Snake Park, an SABC2 teen drama.

In October 2016, she appeared on the screen playing her first starring role. She landed the role of Winnie in the Mzansi Magic teen drama series Is’thunzi.

Her amazing style of acting in the drama series, Is’thunzi, did not go unnoticed. In September 2017, she received a nomination for an International Emmy award in the category Best Performance by an Actress.

In 2017, she landed another starring role as Ipeleng in MTV Shuga. Appearing on season 5 of the drama series which aired on March 8.

She appeared again in the drama series in 2019 in Season 7 titled MTV Shuga: Down South 2. 

Making her first appearance on the SABC1 soapie Generations: The Legacy, she was cast as Okuhle Cele. After a month she starred in the SABC1 miniseries Side Dish.

She landed a lead on the Amazon Prime series The Underground Railroad. In the series, Thuso was cast as Cora.

Boyfriend

Rumors had it that Thuso Mbedu is dating Dr. Musa Mthombeni. However, credible reports covered that she openly turned down Musa which worried the young man. 

Both of them, however, have made it known to the general public that they share a relationship as friends. Nothing romantic is going on between them.

Car

It looks like the beauty loves cars of luxury. On 14 May 2021, she shared snaps of herself standing with the keys of a very expensive car. Raising an arm to reveal the keys, the actress seemed so happy.
