Bongi Ndaba (born 10 February 1972) is a household name in the South African film industry. She is a writer, producer, playwright, and actress.

As an actress, she is best known for playing the lead role as Thembeka Nkosi in Izingane zoBaba. She appeared in the SABC1 mini-series adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear in 2008.

As a writer, she occupied the position of the head writer and also co-produced Generations, a South African soap opera (2012-2014). 

Though, she had earlier worked behind the scenes for eight years. This adds up to a total of eleven years with the soap opera.

As a playwright, she is the brain behind Shreds and Dreams.

Background

She was born on 10 February 1972 in Free State, South Africa. Her audition for an acting role at The Playhouse Company in Durban was successful. She was selected by theatre practitioner Themi Venturas.

Education

She enrolled at the Durban University of Technology and studied performing arts. During her days in the higher institution, she developed her interest in playwriting.

She also obtained a second degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Bongi moved to Johannesburg in search of television opportunities in the city.

Career

As a writer, Market Theatre’s New Writer’s Festival noticed her skills. This created the opportunity for her to work with Zake Mda, a poet, playwright, and novelist.

After being part of a six-month selection process for an internship for Generations. She was among the 230 hopefuls who competed for the internship. She made it among the eight who were selected.

In 2012, Bongi Ndaba became the head writer and served for 2 years until she resigned in 2014.

She also occupied the position of the head writer on Isidingo. Bongi landed the role in the soap opera in 2016 and worked until 2017.

As a scriptwriter, she has worked on many South African TV shows including Generations, Jozi-H, Hillside, and Gaza.

Shred and Dreams (2004) which was initially a stage play was made into a mini-series in 2011. After three years, in 2014, it was revived into a full season.
