Residents in Gauteng facing water cuts

An explosion at the Palmiet water pumping station has left several suburbs in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane facing water shortages.

Rand Water says the explosion took place at the Alberton booster pump station on Sunday, leaving three pumps destroyed.

The Palmiet station supplies several reservoirs operated by Rand Water and is now pumping well below capacity.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and repairs are currently underway.

Details of affected suburbs will be communicated by municipalities.
