Existing vaccines will still offer us some protection against the new B.1.1.529 variant, according to vaccinologist, Shabir Madhi.
The Health Department is warning the new variant is highly transmissible. This comes as SA recorded over 2,000 new COVID-19 cases.
I am concerned but at the same time I think our concern would be misplaced if we start believing that vaccines are not going to protect against severe disease and death,” he said.
“It might well be that unfortunately that vaccines might be less effective when it comes to protecting against infection and mild COVID due to this particular variant but for severe disease and death, I think we have some level of security that vaccines are probably going to maintain.
