Serena Williams is delighted as she makes her long-awaited return to Wimbledon

American top tennis star Serena has expressed delight in the development of her return to the Wimbledon event that will get underway later this month.

Williams will make his way to the prestigious Grand Slam showpiece for the first time in a year at Wimbledon as she is handed a singles wildcard.

The move was publicised on Tuesday at All England Club but the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner has dropped as far as the rankings are concerned.

Williams has not played tennis since sustaining an injury a year ago and that led to her occupying 1208 in the world rankings.

The talented star indicated she would be at Wimbledon when she uploaded a photograph of her white trainers on the grass on Instagram.

The 40-year-old will make her eagerly anticipated return to competitive tennis in an event that will be held at Eastbourne International.

“I am excited to return to the Rothesay International Eastbourne in England and to be back on the grass — a surface that has been so good to me throughout my career,” said Williams.

“Eastbourne has a unique charm that you don’t see anywhere else on tour, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again.”

Speaking about the star’s inclusion and return to the tournament, Wimbledon board member Tim Henman, praised the line-up.

“It is a good selection on the women’s side,” he said.

“Serena requested (a wild card) actually a couple of weeks ago, and she is going to play down at Eastbourne. Hopefully, she will get a good chance of getting some grasscourt preparation in.”

The former French Open winner bagged the last of her seven Wimbledon singles titles in 2016 but reached the final in 2018 and 2019 after returning from having a child.

She made a tearful exit in 2021 in the first set against Aliaksandra Sasnovich but excused herself from the tournament owing to a leg injury.
