Why Mariah Carey is being sued for her holiday hit ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

The Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey is facing copyright infringement over her festive season hit, All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Mariah released the single in 1994, on her Merry Christmas LP and the track went on to become an instant hit.

The track essentially became the “anthem” of Christmas and was played in malls, radio stations and festive season commercials around the world.

The US singer is now facing a $20 million lawsuit for copyright infringement after Andy Stone, a singer-songwriter says he wrote a song with the same title.

Stone claims his song was written 5-years before Mariah Carey released her track. While the songs are vastly different both musically and lyrically, Stone argues that Mariah did not get his permission to use the title.

He says he never gave permission, consented nor gave anyone license to use his title.

Stone is using Mariah Carey, song co-writer Walter Afansieff and Sony Music Group for the unauthorised use of the song.

Mariah Carey’s hit went on to earn $60 million in royalties to date and the song topped charts every holiday season.

There has been no response from Mariah, Afsanieff and Sony Music.
