Late Busi Lurayi’s ‘How To Ruin Christmas’ crew bags 16 SAFTA nominations

After losing one of their talented lead actresses, Busisiwe Lurayi who passed away earlier this week, the ‘How To Ruin Christmas’ cast will find some solace after receiving good news.

The film has received 16 nominations for the 16th annual South African and Film Television Awards (SAFTA) as the nominees were announced on Thursday.

The All-star production suffered a massive blow last week when the news of Lurayi’s passing filtered through the entertainment industry.

However, the nominations will come as a source of inspiration considering that the production headlines the list of nominations.

The film recognised in several categories. This includes the Best Achievement in Wardrobe in a TV Comedy, Best Achievement in Sound, and Best Achievement in Cinematography in a TV Comedy.

Even though Busi Lurayi is no more, she still stands a chance to bag the best actress in a TV comedy award. She was nominated with the likes of Shamilla Miller, Ashley De Lange, Julia Anastasopoulos and Ilse-Lee Van Niekerk.

In a statement, the National Film and Video Foundation CEO Makhosazana Khanyile stated that 2022’s theme is ‘Frame the Future’. He also stated that the theme calls for the industry to join forces in crafting a new path forward.

“Last year, we faced our greatest challenge ever post-Covid, this year, we celebrate the unity that helped us get through, while actively promoting optimism within our local industry,” said Khanyile.

He then added by noting how good the nominees are looking this year. This will showcase the creative innovation that our local industry has continued to display despite the circumstances that we have been faced with.

With the eagerly anticipated event scheduled to be held in September, some categories such as the Best TV Presenter and Most Popular Soap/Telenovela will be voted for by the public.
