Orlando Pirates have announced that long servant, Happy Jele is leaving the Soweto giants. This is after 16 years of service to the club.
The central defender has already been linked with a move to Royal AM. He leaves the Buccaneers as a revered legend.
‘Magents’ has been with the former African champions since 2006 and is hailed for his professionalism and leadership qualities.
The DStv Premiership side released an announcement on Monday morning. This was followed by lengthy discussions between club chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza, and the player.
Jele’s contract expired at the end of the 2021/22 season. The club presented various job options available to the long-serving defender in a non-playing capacity.
However, Jele expressed his intention to continue playing football beyond the 2021/2022 term. This was deemed impossible at the Sea Robbers.
The Orlando Pirates club wishes Happy Jele the best of luck for the future and express gratitude to him.
Jele departs the only club he has played for in his professional career as a modern-day legend. He made over 400 appearances in the club’s famous colours and scored 18 goals while winning eight trophies. He is also the last member of the double treble-winning sides of 2011 and 2012 to depart the Soweto giants.
Happy is said to be a special character who has been reliable to the club throughout the years. His character has guaranteed him a future at the club beyond his playing days.
Meanwhile, local media reports suggested that the Mpumalanga-born player was courted by Thwihli Thwahla. It is still to be confirmed if he will indeed join a club in the South African top flight.
