The South African Premier Soccer League has announced a ground breaking knockout tournament for all the DStv Premiership sides.Through the chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, he said the new tournament will see four teams battling it out for a whopping R2 million.
As per the press release, Khoza announced that the Carling Black Label Cup has now been extended to include four teams, with the Cup set to be contested on 12 November. The tournament, which Khoza said will be a once-off event for the time being, will take over from the now defunct Iwisa Charity and Telkom Charity spectacular showpieces where fans voted in teams to take part in the tournament.
That particular tournament was a pre-season tournament, but this one will take place just after the teams complete their first tranche of league fixtures.
The top four will get R2m for participation and the winner will get a further R2m,” said Khoza on Friday.
“This is not the replacement of the Charity Cup. The clubs will announce what will happen beyond this. The issue of charity has not yet been discussed for now in the league.” The ‘Iron Duke’ confirmed that the fans will vote in the four teams and those who don’t make the top four will receive R100 000, with the teams that make the tournament getting R200 000.
The winners of the tournament will get R2 million and the league’s governing body announced that more details will be provided in due course.
