Arthur Zwane comments on the disappointing performance of defender Siyabonga Ngezana

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has commented on the disappointing performance of defender Siyabonga Ngezana in their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.

The defender was guilty of gifting Sundowns two goals in the first 17 minutes of the match on Saturday.

First, he saw his undercooked back pass to Bruce Bvuma intercepted by Gaston Sirino to open the scoring. Shortly thereafter he hacked down Peter Shalulile in the box, before the Namibian dusted himself to slot home from 12 yards out.

He was eventually substituted for Njabulo Ngcobo at half time.

After the match, Zwane was asked about the 23-year-old’s performance against the Brazilians, saying that Ngezana will bounce back from the disappointing showing.

“Look, if you looked at how it happened, it was early in the game and then from there he couldn’t recover. Its unlike Siya. He is one player that in one-versus-one situations he is one of the best we have. Unfortunately, he was not himself today,” he told journalists at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Zwane further went on to reveal that Ngezana was in fact carrying a niggling injury heading into the game.

“I think because of the knee as well. He came to me after the game, because he couldn’t finish the game and said “I’m nit 100% okay, but I’ll give my best. I said if he can’t we’ll obviously take him out and bring in someone else because we didn’t want to break that combination of him and Zitha [Kwinika] right now, more especially because of the game that we were coming to play here.”

“Unfortunately, he was not himself, he was not at his best and he had to commit that error that I think also killed his confidence but these things do happen in football. I’m not gonna kill him because of that. We’ll try and help him to lift his spirit in training. Many other players are still going to commit such mistakes and we move on. We’ll get better with time. He mustn’t worry about that, its part of the game, we all make mistakes,” he added.

There will be some respite for Chiefs who are only in action on 20 August when they take on DStv Premiership rookies Richards Bay at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
