Banyana Banyana have received their bonuses as they were promised by the South African Football Association (SAFA) prior to their participation at the 2022 CAF African Women’s Nations Cup.
The South African women’s side went on to bag the title last month and the country’s football governing body has fulfilled the promise.
SAFA held a press conference on Friday at Nasrec and confirmed the monies have been paid to the players coached by Desiree Ellis.
Ahead of the tournament that was staged in Morocco last month, SAFA president Danny Jordaan promised the team a bonus of R400 000 each for winning the tournament.
Banyana made history and beat Morocco in the final, and SAFA’s financial manager Gift Sekonde confirmed the payment to the players.
“We’ve honoured the commitment made by the president Danny Jordaan to pay the players R400 000 that they were promised. The 23 players have indeed been paid on Friday,” Sekonde said at the SAFA headquarters.
“We made the payment with a wide smile, and we’re happy to say we’ve honoured the promise, and the incentive was approved with a smile.”
Furthermore, the African champions were offered a staggering R5.8-million bonus from Sports, Arts, and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa but Sekonde confirmed that amount will be paid separately.
Meanwhile, Jordaan made it clear that the technical team was graded differently and their bonuses are not included in the confirmed payment.
“The bonus scheme was for the players, and the coaches will be rewarded according to their contract,” Jordaan said.
“Staff members get bonuses that are linked to their contracts that are separate from the players.”
