Diep City Obed ‘Ringo’ Baloyi expresses desire to secure SAFTA gong

While Diep City is set to bow out of the television screens, many South Africans are left disappointed and that is the same sentiment shared by actor Obed Baloyi.

Baloyi is one of the country’s most talented actors and he is hoping to secure an award in the upcoming South African Television Awards set for this weekend, September 03 in Johannesburg.

Baloyi, who plays Ringo, has been nominated for a prestigious accolade but faces a stern test as he competes with top talents such as Abdul Khoza, Don Mlangeni-Nawa, and Seputla Sebogodi.

Airing on Mzansi Magic, the telenovela has entered its final stages and it is currently shooting its last scenes and wrapping up its last season.

Baloyi is quoted by SowetanLIVE saying this is not his maiden nomination as he currently holds a gong he bagged in 2013 while starring for Tsutsuma in Ga Re Dumele.

“I am nominated with some of the industry greats. These are people whose talents I admire. I mean, I looked up to people like Seputla and Bra Don, who are veterans in the industry,” he said.

“Being nominated with them means that I am also a great actor. I used to see Bra Don while I was taking acting classes at DOCC in Orlando. If I win it, it will really mean that I have worked hard for it and I deserve it.”

Despite featuring in front of the camera for over three decades, Baloyi explains he has never enjoyed a role than the one he plays as Ringo.

“I can’t believe that two people gave me money because of that episode. A guy showed me the video and gave me R500,” he added.

“Last week, another one gave me R100 just for that scene. I’m grateful to such people.”

Based in Dipekloof Zone 4 in Soweto, the humble Baloyi doesn’t regard himself as a celebrity and he expressed sadness as the series is coming to a halt.

“It is sad that it is ending. I felt that the show needs another chance. I worked hard to build that role from scratch. It is not child’s play to build a character,” he expressed.

“After portraying Tsutsuma for years, I made sure Ringo is totally different from him. It hurts that when you tell people that the show is ending and they can’t believe it.”
