Bailly left United this summer for Olympique Marseille on a season-long loan with an option to buy for £5 million should the Ligue 1 side qualify for the Champions League.
The Ivorian fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford but the defender feels that this was down to the Premier League club favoring English players.
“The club should avoid favoring English players and give everyone a chance,” said Bailly. “[The club should] encourage competition in the dressing room, not just look out for some. I’ve always had the feeling that the national player was prioritised.
“That doesn’t happen at Chelsea or other big Premier League clubs. Some people take it for granted that they are going to start, and that weakens the team. Luckily Erik Ten Hag has a lot of character and I hope he can change that dynamic.” Bailly said.
Bailly had a hard time at United after his first season. The 28-year-old has suffered a lot of injuries in Manchester and has been sidelined. The Ivorian missed 103 games for the Red Devils in his six-year spell.
Bailly, played 113 times for United across six seasons, averaging fewer than 20 appearances per season.
However, Erik ten Hag insists nationality is irrelevant when it comes to his team selection process at Manchester United.
“I have nothing to say about that because it was last season, I wasn’t in charge, so I don’t know the situation,” Ten Hag said. When asked if nationality would have a bearing on his team selection, he replied: “Not for me.”
Ten Hag has not been afraid of making bold selection choices since becoming Manchester United boss, not only has he dropped Cristiano Ronaldo, but England stars Maguire and Luke Shaw have been relegated to the bench.
