African queens Banyana Banyana bag yet another award

On behalf of the South African women’s national team, Banyana Banyana’s Hilda Magaiga and defender Nomvula Kgoale accepted awards from Standard Bank.

The women’s national side, Banyana Banyana, were recognised for their efforts in the 2022 CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations as they emerged as champions in July this year.

With the absence of coach Desiree Ellis, Magaiga and Kgoale were Banyana’s representatives when they were awarded the Top Women in Sport award by Standard Bank.

Banyana boss Ellis was a notable absentee but she was named the Top Women Leader at the Standard Bank Top Women Awards that were staged at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg last week.

The recognition comes after Banyana lifted their first WAFCON title in July following a 2-1 win in the final against the hosts, Morocco, in Rabat.

Banyana defender Kgoale accepted the accolade and said the event means there is increasing recognition and support from the public and corporate South Africa.

“It means something, it means somebody is watching, finally, because for the longest time we had been named the bridesmaids of Africa and I think it was about time and the girls thought it was inevitable that we win this tournament [Wafcon],” she said.

“Before that, we were discouraged because we had problems — as you know with women’s football we are hardly paid. So we really needed some kind of motivation to keep us going.”

In attendance were top women in various sectors of the economy and that includes the likes of ex-SA deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, legendary musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and media personality Bonang Matheba among others.

Meanwhile, Entertainment SA has discovered that the awards ceremony has just entered its 20th year as it plans to empower South African women in different fields and industries.

Remaining with women’s football, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies came short of bagging their second Women’s African Champions League trophy on Sunday.

Masandawana Ladies were reduced to nine woman and they were handed a heavy defeat by Morocco’s AS FAR in the final via a 4-0 scoreline.
