The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has revealed that she is 43 percent Nigerian and expressed her desire to learn more about her roots in a new episode of her Spotify exclusive podcast, archetypes.
Markle made this revelation known during a conversation with Senegalese American actress and comedian Issa Rae, and Nigerian-American comedian and writer Ziwe Fumudoh.
“I just had my genealogy done a couple of years ago; I am 43 percent Nigerian,” she said
She said,” I was incredibly excited to sit down with Ziwe, a Nigerian American comedian, actor, and writer.
The revelation came as a shock to Ziwe who excitedly shouted, “No way” and further asked about the tribe in Nigeria she was from.
But Meghan answered, “I am going to start to dig deeper because anyone that I told especially Nigerian women is always like what?”
Ziwe said the news was “huge for our community”, adding: “No, honestly, you do look like a Nigerian, you look like my aunt Uzo. So this is great.”
still, on the podcast, Meghan called out the “angry Black woman” trope and said there is a difference between being “difficult” and being “clear”.
She told actor Issa Rae, who was also a guest on the episode: “You’re allowed to set a boundary, you’re allowed to be clear. It does not make your demand; it does not make you difficult. It makes you clear.”
Meghan’s podcast, which came back to Spotify on 4 October following its pause during the mourning period of queen Elizabeth II, has retained its number one position since debuting on Spotify in august 2022, which featured guest Serena Williams.
