Renowned muso Zakes Bantwini ready to hang up his mic

It may come as a blow to his supporters, but South African multi-award-winning musician Zakes Bantwini has set a deadline regarding his future.

Bantwini, born Zakhele Madida, has revealed that he will hang up his microphone as a recording artist, thus wrapping up a music career that lasted for almost two decades.

The SAMA award winner has recently bagged a Grammy nomination for his work with Wouter Hellerman and Nomcebo in the dance song titled Bayethe.

Bantwini spoke to a local publication and outlined his future plans, saying he is planning to release one more album as Zakes Bantwini.

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, the Unomathemba singer says he will still be involved in music to produce and work with other artists.

“I don’t want to say I’m retiring from music, but definitely this is the last album that I’m working on under this brand. It’s over for Zakes Bantwini,” Bantwini told TshisaLIVE.

“But Zakhele Madida is still going to produce music for other people, and you know, they always say you should quit while you are on top.

“I will tell you now, my music is classic, I’m enjoying a big success. I’m nominated at the Grammys, I hope I win so that I really bow out with a grand bow.”

After clinching his maiden SAMA accolade this year through the Ghetto King offering which was released in 2021, the talented muso added that the Zakes Bantwini brand has always revolved around collaborations.

“I’m a collaborator. Music is a collaborative effort. The music is an instrumental collaboration,” he added.

“It’s a bass collaboration, it’s the drums, with keys, horns, and the voice, in essence, the music is a collaborative effort. So the career also is a collaboration.

“My music as well, I mean, I’ve collaborated with Nomcebo and Wouter, Kasango, Nana Atta, Karyendasoul. All these big moments abo Wasting My Time. My whole entire career is based on collaboration..I know that and I embrace that. I think that’s why I’m able to enjoy what I’m doing right now.”

The 42-year-old KwaMashu-born artist will hope to claim the prestigious Grammy next and that could further decorate his career.
