VIDEO: EFF & Mzansi irked by ‘racist’ Cape Town pub owner

Police in Cape Town are investigating a case of racism and assault following a video that went viral where a black patron was allegedly refused entry into a bar.

Media reports indicate that the Cape Town-based drinking establishment was called out on social media for a racist incident on Friday.

In a video that went viral on various social media platforms, patrons of Hank’s Olde Irish Pub demanded action amid allegations of institutionalised discrimination against the black customer.

In the clip, Christopher Logan, a friend of the alleged victim, Thabiso Danca, is seen confronting the owner of the establishment after Danca was denied entrance.

According to Danca, the bouncer said that Hank’s had a right of admission policy that stated he needed to be accompanied by a white person to enter the pub in Bree Steet, Cape Town.

“My friend came out, and I was allowed in. I was accompanied by a white person now,” Danca told News24.

“I was there for about three minutes, but I couldn’t stand it after being told that I can’t come in because I am black and left.”

In the wake of the incident many deem it is fuelled by racism, the pub denied the allegations via a media statement.

“We as owners have never- nor will we ever instruct our staff- to discriminate on any basis whatsoever, whether that be gender, sexual orientation or race,” read the statement.

“We want to place on record that we are extremely concerned for the well-being and safety of the staff involved, therefore we will not be commenting any further while we conduct an internal disciplinary process about these allegations and the police conduct their criminal investigation into the case of assault opened against the individual making accusations in the video.”

It is reported that CCTV footage of this alleged assault by Logan, without audio, was also supplied to the police for further investigation.

Looking at reactions EFF have vowed to open a case of racial discrimination as they issued a statement.

“This is blatant racism, criminalisation, racial profiling, degradation and reduction of black people to criminals and prisoners who must always be under watch,” the EFF said in a statement.

“This racism reveals the psychosis of many white racists who are still locked in a racist paradigm of white exclusivity and the old days of apartheid nostalgia.

“The Western Cape has become the last bastion and safe haven for hardcore racists who still think that they are superior to blacks because of the lighter pigmentation of their skin…Racists have become emboldened and now have the audacity to tell black people where to go and not to go in a democratic dispensation.”
