Black Motion, one of South Africa’s most popular music duos, is going through a difficult time. It’s heartbreaking to see.
Last year, there were rumours that Black Motion was breaking up, but the band promptly denied them.
Spirit Motion, which is owned by Black Motion, issued a statement in April last year saying that the group’s founding members, Bongani Mohosana and Thabo ‘Smol’ Mabogwane, would not be splitting ways. Instead, Mohosana was establishing his solo DJ career.
“Spirit Motion would like to state on record that Black Motion members Thabo Mabongwane, aka Smol, and Bongani Mohosana, aka MurdahBongz, have not parted ways.
“Black Motion still exists and has plans for more years to come. The only change, which does not affect the duo, is that Murdah has re-branded himself from Murdah to Mörda.”
After then, the duo continued to perform together until Black Motion’s new member, Problem Child Ten83, appeared.
On Wednesday morning, Black Motion stunned us by posting a court judgement and a vandalised studio on Instagram with the caption: “Tick – Tock. ‘Always enter like a kitten and leave like a lion. But NEVER enter like a lion and leave like a kitten. Always be humble’.”
We’re not sure what that means, but we have a feeling things aren’t exactly smooth amongst the group’s original members.
The court document, dated January 10, 2023, declares that in a dispute between Spirit Motion (applicant) and Bongani Robert Mohosana (respondent), Mohasana must replace the music group’s studio equipment.
“The respondent is to restore possession of the recording studio apparatus (listed in annexure A of the court order) to the applicant by no later than Friday, 13 January 2023 at 17:00.
According to the images of the vandalised studio, it appears that a forced entrance occurred, and part of the studio equipment was stolen. We don’t know who removed the equipment, but Mohosana is required by the court to replace it.
We, like many South Africans, believe that the organisation disbanded in a shambles.
They only put up a front last year due to incomplete projects and potentially early bookings they had to honour.
Aside from that, it’s obvious that the tree has fallen since, if they’re still “brothers,” as they say, why would they unfollow each other on Instagram?
In any case, we are grateful for the time they have blessed us with cheerful music and beautiful performances.
