The blue side of Manchester had a reason to celebrate on Saturday as their team, Manchester City won the Premier League in what has been a season that started not so great but eventually has worked in their favour as they won the league for the fifth time in six seasons.
This comes after second-placed Arsenal lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday which automatically saw the Citizens being crowned champions without having to play another game. A second consecutive defeat for the Gunners left Mikel Arteta’s men still four points adrift of City with one game left for them to play.
Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi scored the winning goal which gave the team a huge boost that saw them survive relegation in their first season back in the top flight for 23 years. Manchester City’s title triumph could potentially be the first trophy of the season but the Citizens are gunning for more as they are two games away from clinching a first historic treble for the team as Pep Guardiola’s men face Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Inter Milan in the Champions League final next month.
Arsenal started the season on form up until the second half of the season and managed to push Manchester City all the way but eventually crumbled on the last hurdle as they have now lost a second successive game. That resulted in City automatically being crowned Champions despite them not having played a game further, they face Chelsea on Sunday.
The newly-crowned champions are unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions, including a 4-1 thrashing of Arsenal when the sides met in a top-of-the-table clash last month.
At the other end of the table, Forest move six points clear of the drop zone meaning two from Everton, Leeds or Leicester will join Southampton in the Championship next season.
