Icon Patti LaBelle gave a powerful and fun performance in tribute to another icon Tina Turner at the 2023 BET Awards. LaBelle performed Miss Tina’s best song “Simply the Best.”
While Miss LaBelle was enjoying herself looking the part in a black dress that was covered in sparkling fringe which was one of Tina’s signature styles.
The 79-year-old while performing she seemed to forget some of the lyrics. She said “Whatever, I can’t see the words. I don’t know.” She continued, “I’m trying y’all,” while trying to improvise the performance.
At the end of her performance, LaBelle screamed, “God bless you, Tina Turner, BET, hip-hop!”
Even with her trying her best to improvise and hummed through the first intro of the song it seems audiences and Twitter users are just not gonna stand for it and shared their displeased.
It seems not all was her fault as one Twitter user came to her rescue and shared a video during LaBelle’s performance where she wrote that LaBelle couldn’t see the teleprompter as people were standing and dancing seemingly to obscure her view.
The user wrote “Lmaoooo Yall Patti couldn’t see the teleprompter bc our section was infront of it omg”
BET spokesperson said to THR, “Due to the crowd’s enthusiasm, the teleprompter was obstructed, obscuring Ms. LaBelle’s view of the lyrics.”
