LOS ANGELES – Renowned veteran US comedian Mel Brooks, who will turn 97 this week, is set to be honoured with an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievements, over fifty years after his win for Best Original Screenplay for The Producers. The Academy made the announcement on Monday.
Brooks, known for his remarkable work as an actor, producer, and lyricist, gained widespread acclaim for his iconic satirical portrayal of Adolf Hitler in The Producers, his fearless exploration of racial bigotry in Blazing Saddles, and his comical take on horror films in Young Frankenstein.
Having already secured an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy – collectively known as an “EGOT” – throughout his illustrious career spanning eight decades, Brooks joins the elite group of entertainers who have achieved this remarkable feat.
The presentation of the golden statuette to Brooks will take place at a ceremony in Los Angeles this November, alongside other esteemed figures such as Angela Bassett.
Bassett, aged 64, has previously received two Oscar nominations, one for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It, and another earlier this year as the first actor ever nominated for a Marvel superhero film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Janet Yang, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, praised Angela Bassett, stating, “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”
Yang also expressed her admiration for Mel Brooks, stating, “Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humour, and his legacy has made a lasting impact on every facet of entertainment.”
The honorary Oscars, awarded annually to recognize lifetime achievements, were separated into a distinct event in 2009 to streamline the main show’s schedule.
Last November, honourees included Michael J. Fox, who received the Jean Hersholt statuette for his notable humanitarian work in the film industry.
This year, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, which support and nurture the early careers of filmmakers, particularly those from underrepresented communities.
Additionally, Carol Littleton, the editor of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, will receive a fourth honorary Oscar.
The 14th Governors Awards will be held on November 18th.
