NOMZAMO MBATHA REFLECTS ON SUPPORT RECEIVED FOR SHAKA ILEMBE

Academic Hlonipha Mokoena, who was involved in consultations during the production of Shaka iLembe, has addressed the controversy surrounding the cast’s wardrobe choices in the first episode of the series. Mokoena clarified that the intention was to be authentic in representing Zulu/Nguni culture but also to ensure the comfort and consent of the actors involved. The decision was made early on that no actor or actress would be forced to reveal their body if they felt uncomfortable or exploited.

Shaka iLembe is a fictional interpretation of historical events set in the 1700s, depicting the origin story of the renowned Zulu king, Shaka, and the events that shaped his life. The producers aimed to portray Nguni culture respectfully and authentically throughout the series.

Mokoena emphasized that the accusation of objectifying women in Shaka iLembe is not a matter of policy but rather a cultural misunderstanding. Historically and culturally, none of the actors or actresses in Zulu culture were nude. They adorned themselves according to fashion and social status, and both men and women took pride in their bodies. Mokoena clarified that young men, for example, would wear traditional leather kilts that revealed a part of their buttocks, which scandalized the older generation.

The academic further explained that the reactions to the topless appearances in the series were rooted in a lack of understanding of Zulu culture. Bare-breasted women and men with exposed buttocks are not shocking or sexual in the context of Zulu traditions. Luyanda Madonia, a YouTuber, expressed her lack of shock, stating that the representation was accurate and appropriate for the story. Thobeka Mthembu, an influencer, criticized the reactions, emphasizing the need for cultural education and understanding.

In conclusion, the cast of Shaka iLembe made informed decisions regarding their wardrobe, and the portrayal of Zulu culture on screen is an expression of beauty and cultural significance. The reactions to the topless scenes reflect a lack of understanding and education about Zulu traditions.
