UNDETECTABLE VIRAL LOAD WHAT DOES MEAN

When you are HIV or even affected by it, then you have come to terms of learning about terms like “undetectable” but for a person who has never heard of it, they tend to wonder to themselves as to what it means, Let’s find out.

What is it?

The first thing we need to ask ourselves and understand is the viral load and what it is. A viral load is the copies or amount of the virus in each sample of blood.  A person living with HIV can achieve an undetectable viral load only if they take their healthcare provider’s orders accordingly with regard to the prescribed ARVs.

This means that the pills prescribed by your healthcare provider are fighting the virus and it results in the levels of the virus in the body being decreased. It even gets to the point whereby the virus can’t be detected when going for HIV testing.  This means that your immune system is working well in defending itself from germs and other infections and your body is in good health.

What does undetectable mean to an HIV-negative person?

If one of the couples is HIV positive while the partner is not, they are on proper treatment, taking their ARVs accordingly and their viral load is undetectable, then there’s no risk of being infected with HIV through sexual intercourse. That however, does not mean that you should have sexual intercourse recklessly because even if your partner is undetectable, there are other forms of sickness that you can come into contact with when you do not use a condom. Condoms still prevent unplanned pregnancy and other STIs.

In most cases, people that are taking their medication properly look and feel perfectly fine, that is why it is important to go test before you start having unprotected sex with your significant other, that does not mean you do not trust them or suspect them of anything bad but it simply means you are taking ownership and responsibility for your life.
