Media personality Jada Pinkett Smith has made it known to the public that she and husband Will Smith have been separated for seven years and are “figuring out” their future.
Back in 2020, the ‘Girls Trip’ was all over the headlines because of her her “entanglement” with August Alsina, and she has now made it known that her and ‘King Richard’ actor had been leading separate lives for six years prior to him defending her and hitting Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
Talking to NBC News and People magazine about her marriage currently she mentioned that they’re still figuring things out. When NBC asked her why they kept the public appearance of being a happily married couple, she said: “I think, just not being ready yet. Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership. In regards to how do we present that to people. We hadn’t figured that out.”
The 52-year-old mother of two reflected while doing the interview, she said there were a lot of things that played a role in their split, and by the time 2016 hit, they were “exhausted with trying.” But even though they have been separated, Jada says she made a promise there will never be a reason for a divorce.
The actress admitted to People magazine that she thought Smith smacking Rock in response to a joke about her alopecia was all part of a “skit”. She said: “I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realised it wasn’t a skit.”
Pinkett Smith just recently release a book titled ‘Worthy’, and in the book she opens up about her shock when the ‘Pursuit of Happyness’ star referred to her as his “wife” at the awards ceremony.
“It’s not until Will yells from his seat back up at Chris to ‘keep my wife’s name out your f*****’ mouth’, and then repeats it, that I perceive the gravity of the situation, and that, no, it had not been a skit.” – she wrote in an extract obtained by People.
“Even so, I am unclear on the reason why Will is so upset. We had been living separate lives and were there as family, not as husband and wife. But when I hear Will yell ‘wife’ in the chaos of the moment, an internal shift of ‘Oh s*** . . . I am his wife!’ happens instantly.” – she added.
