Thandiswa Mazwai, the acclaimed creator of “Zabalaza,” is set to grace the United States with her presence for a “Tiny Desk” performance next month. This revelation came through a now-deleted post she shared on Wednesday morning.
Expressing her astonishment, Mazwai wrote, “The nerve!!!! Do you know that someone called me from Washington DC asking me to come perform at their office!!! To make it worse, they don’t have a stage, just some tiny desk!!!!!”
Accompanied by laughter and celebratory emojis, this post hinted at her upcoming participation in NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, a series featuring artists performing at host Bob Boilen’s desk at the NPR office. Previously, renowned musicians like Sam Smith, Usher, Charlie Wilson, Babyface, and others have graced this intimate setting.
In a subsequent post, Mazwai confirmed that the filming for her Tiny Desk performance would take place on 16 January, expressing a desire to have some of her followers present in the room during the event.
Notably, other South African artists such as Black Coffee and Black Motion featured on Tiny Desk in 2021. Additionally, Mazwai disclosed that she would be performing at the Lincoln Centre in New York on 14 January.
Actress Rami Chuene wrote: “Damn!!!! @thandiswamazwai this tiny desk is not ready for you! A whole King Tha? This is incredible, they’re not worthy but I know you will gracefully do what you do so well. Yes! Yes! Yes! ????????????????????????
Acknowledging her achievements, the Bongo Maffin vocalist recently received the Simon Nkoli Award at the 2023 Feather Awards. Named after the late gay activist and anti-apartheid leader Simon Tseko Nkoli, the award holds special significance for Mazwai, who expressed gratitude for finding a home and a sense of belonging in the room filled with supporters.
Mazwai embraced the title of a gay icon and acknowledged the community for radicalizing her and instilling the belief that she is enough just the way she is.
