Orlando Pirates secured additional bragging rights in the Soweto derby as they defeated Moroka Swallows 2-0 in a DStv Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday. This victory comes on the heels of Pirates’ previous triumph over Kaizer Chiefs in another derby last month. Moroka Swallows, having lost to Chiefs earlier, now suffers a second consecutive derby defeat against the Buccaneers.
The win serves as a significant morale boost for Orlando Pirates, particularly following their recent goalless draw against Richards Bay FC in the league. With this latest triumph, the Sea Robbers have ascended to the top half of the league table, claiming the sixth spot with 19 points from 12 games. Meanwhile, Moroka Swallows finds themselves in the seventh position with 18 points from an equal number of matches as Pirates.
Throughout the match, Orlando Pirates exhibited dominance, making numerous entries into the Swallows’ box. Although an early goal by Evidence Makgopa in the eighth minute was disallowed due to an offside ruling, Makgopa later found the mark with a brilliant strike in the 40th minute, beating Swallows’ goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
In the second half, Swallows intensified their offensive efforts in pursuit of an equalizer, but the solid Pirates defense thwarted any potential threats. A pivotal moment arrived in the 72nd minute when substitute Monnapule Saleng contributed a magical play, leading to Pirates’ second goal as his shot deflected off Vusi Sibiya inside the box.
While the hosts finished the game strongly and had opportunities for a third goal, their efforts remained unrewarded. Orlando Pirates’ coach, Jose Riveiro, will undoubtedly be pleased with the three points and aims to maintain the winning momentum in their upcoming match against TS Galaxy at home on Saturday. On the other hand, Moroka Swallows, under coach Steve Komphela, faces a disappointing night and will seek to rectify their performance when they take on SuperSport United on December 15 at Dobsonville Stadium.
