Jackie Phamotse Sentenced to House Arrest and Fine for Comments on Kumalos

Here’s the tea- So last September, author Jackie Phamotse faced legal action for comments she made about Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo, which involved baseless claims and drew the couple into a controversy regarding a sex tape.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court convicted her of criminal defamation, crimen injuria, and contempt of court due to these remarks on Twitter and in her book ‘I tweet what I like… So sue me.’

Phamotse has been sentenced to two years of house arrest, a fine of R30,000, or 10 months in prison. Additionally, she must complete 16 hours of monthly community service and attend various programs during her house arrest.

Despite the sentencing, Magistrate Saras Naidoo noted that Phamotse showed no remorse for her actions. Naidoo emphasized the irreparable damage Phamotse’s comments had on the Kumalos’ lives.

While direct imprisonment was considered inappropriate, Naidoo mentioned that Phamotse’s status as a first-time offender played a role in the sentencing.

Here is a video of Phomotse leaving the court yesterday:
