Celebrating Pride Month: The Journey of Mthokozisi Modise

In honour of Pride Month, we’re spotlighting the powerful story of Mthokozisi Modise from Mzansi Magic’s acclaimed telenovela, Champions (Channel 161 on DStv, 19:00). Portrayed by the talented Aphelele Shezi, Mthokozisi’s journey navigates the delicate balance between a secret romance and the harsh reality of living with a homophobic father. His story resonates deeply within the LGBTQ+ community, shedding light on the struggles faced by many in environments where their truths remain unaccepted.

We spoke with Aphelele Shezi about stepping into Mthokozisi’s shoes and the role’s significance in embracing the spirit of Pride and here is what he had to say:

1. What has it been like playing Mthokozisi, who navigates a secret romance while dealing with a homophobic father?

Playing Mthokozisi has been transformative for me—not just as an actor, but as a person. I felt a profound responsibility to represent a marginalized community that is often overlooked. With every scene, I knew someone out there was affected by our portrayal. My interactions with Philemon, Mthokozisi’s father, served as critical moments of education for the audience. Mthokozisi is unapologetically queer, determined to show that love knows no bounds, regardless of societal judgment.

2. How did you emotionally prepare to portray such a conflicted character?

I was fortunate to work closely with a creative director who guided me through the process. Authenticity was key; I immersed myself in queer films and drew inspiration from the experiences of my queer friends. Understanding their journeys helped me build a character rich in complexity, navigating personal struggles while still supporting those around him.

3. What are some of the challenges Mthokozisi faces, and how do you think this resonates with audiences?

Mthokozisi’s journey highlights the emotional toll of homophobia. He yearns for acceptance from his father and strives to prove his worth, particularly in a sports-centric society that often equates masculinity with heterosexuality. Our aim is to encourage open-mindedness and respect for others’ identities, challenging viewers to confront their biases and misconceptions.

4. Has playing Mthokozisi changed your perspective on love, identity, and acceptance?

Absolutely. Mthokozisi is a fierce advocate for love and acceptance. His strength challenged me to reflect on my own values. I learned that it’s crucial to stand firm in one’s beliefs and support loved ones unapologetically, while also advocating for kindness and understanding.

5. How do you relate to Mthokozisi’s journey?

I share a close bond with my own mother, much like Mthokozisi does with his. This familial connection feels authentic and resonates deeply with my personal experiences like Mtho’s relationship with Marang is like mine with my own siblings, and this has allowed me to bring genuine emotion to the role.

6. How do you hope playing Mthokozisi contributes to broader conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance?

Mthokozisi’s relationship with a soccer player challenges the stereotype that masculinity and homosexuality are mutually exclusive. This storyline prompts important discussions, especially within family settings. As audiences engage with these narratives, we take a step toward greater understanding and acceptance.

7. What advice would you give to someone struggling to come out or accept their identity?

Believe in yourself and your unique purpose in life. Your identity is your superpower—don’t dim your light for anyone. Embrace who you are; authenticity is the key to living a fulfilling life.

As we celebrate Pride Month, Mthokozisi Modise’s journey serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for acceptance and love. Let’s continue to uplift and honour the voices within the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that everyone’s story is heard and valued. Don’t miss the drama on Champions, every weekday at 19:00 on Mzansi Magic DStv channel 161.
