In a sad social media post, Monique Muller, former partner of the media personality Katlego Maboe, recently shared pictures that she claims reveal the physical abuse she went through while with him.
Taking to Instagram Stories, the gender-based violence (GBV) activist voiced her support for Women For Change, an NGO she says was instrumental during her ordeal.
Back in 2020, Monique got a protection order against Maboe, citing allegations of abuse and infidelity, which reportedly included contracting an STI. Despite a high-profile legal battle, the two ultimately decided to “set aside” the lawsuit in 2022. Since then, Maboe has made strides in rebuilding his public image following a career hiatus.
This week, Monique addressed critics who targeted Women For Change over their stance against Chris Brown, a musician with a controversial history of domestic violence, entering South Africa. Defending the NGO’s mission, Monique shared her own experience of the support they offered, from legal guidance to emotional counselling.
“What’s happening to Women For Change is horrific,” she wrote, calling out those who criticize the organization. “You can support your favourite artist, but turning a blind eye to abuse is dangerous.”
Monique shared images from her personal journey, reminding followers of the humanity behind abuse survivors. “I used to be embarrassed by these images,” she admitted, “until I realized that the shame wasn’t mine to bear.” She urged her audience to reconsider their stance before defending those accused of abuse, highlighting the lasting scars, both physical and emotional, that such experiences can leave.
In a powerful closing statement, Monique added: “Evidence often isn’t enough. Survivors have to relive the trauma every day. Remember that before you stand up for an abuser. I was a victim, but now I’m a survivor, and my scars tell that story.”
