“This Has Damaged Me” – Lasizwe Reflects on R2M Student Fund Drama

Lasizwe Dambuza recently opened up on Twitter about the false accusations that haunted him for years, revealing the emotional toll it took on him. He tweeted, “4 years ago, I was dragged through the mud over claims that I stole R2 million for Students, which was False and it’s Lies. Till this day, that accusation still haunts me. I’m seeing people joking about it now, but you don’t understand the damage it caused. I’ve spent 4 years trying to clear my name from something I didn’t do.”

In response, a follower shared a heartfelt memory of how Lasizwe’s initiative had positively impacted their life, saying, “4 years ago, your initiative helped a stressed single parent with university registration fees. I will never forget that and I hope you get cleared.”

This story goes back to March 2021, when Lasizwe launched his now-famous initiative to help South African students struggling with university fees. In just seven days, Lasizwe’s call for donations raised R2 million, providing much-needed support to countless students across the country.

The initiative gained momentum when Lasizwe used his social media platform to ask followers to contribute as little as R10 to help. Starting the fund with a R10 000 donation of his own, Lasizwe quickly inspired a wave of support from individuals and corporate sponsors.

Major donations followed, including Pick n Pay’s R10 000, African Bank’s R10 000, and KFC’s R50 000, with Standard Bank contributing an incredible R1 million to the cause.

Despite the controversy that followed Lasizwe due to the baseless accusations about the funds, the positive impact of his initiative has seemingly been undeniable.
