Athenkosi Cetyana, professionally known as Internet Athi, is an independent, Cape Town-based artist who released his debut single “Wena” on 29 August 2024. His music incorporates his love for storytelling with live performance, and this has led him to share stages with prominent South African artists such as Zoë Modiga, Langa Mavuso, and Ami Faku.
Wena
“Each line in this song has its person in my life,” said Athi in an Instagram caption, posted on the release day of his debut single, “Wena”.
The song is an acknowledgement of the everlasting spirit of love and its transformative power in every sense of the word. Love translated beyond the romantic context.
“Wena” is a body of work that personalises the feeling of love and develops it into a shared experience for listeners. Internet Athi bares his heart through affirming lyricism over a rich melody which signifies that the song is not just a love letter. It is a celebration.
Contributions to the song’s instrumental were made by Zusiphe Mtsitshe (vocals), Edward Fungayi (violin and vocals), Kanu Ntshoko (drums and voice), Lebogang Komane (trumpet), Vuyo Tshwele (flute and vocals), Owethu Ndwandwe (keys), and Zwide Ndwandwe (bass).
Nguwe
“Nguwe” is his follow-up single that will accompany “Wena” in his upcoming independent debut EP. Released on 29 August 2025, Nguwe chronicles certainty in one’s desire. It is sung through passionate storytelling is paired with a gentle beat as Athi continues to bare his heart. “Nguwe” is currently available to stream on all platforms!
His journey with releasing music online can be traced all the way back to 20 April 2023, when he uploaded an audio titled “Wela” on SoundCloud alongside Enkosi Simelane, Kitso Seti, and Zusiphe Mtsitshe.
