SABC 2 Ushers in a New Era: A Homecoming for South Africans

On Thursday, 29 January 2026, SABC 2 welcomed media and industry guests to The Galleria in Sandton for an evening centred on an exciting announcement about the broadcaster’s future. The gathering unfolded as a warm, uplifting affair. One that left attendees feeling hopeful, energised, and eager to see what lies ahead for the channel.

The evening kicked off with lively mingling over welcome drinks, as honoured guests were ushered onto the red carpet for photo opportunities and animated conversations about what they were most looking forward to and the projects on their horizon. Among those we caught up with were seasoned actress and revered industry greats Clementine Mosimane and Charmaine Mtinta, both set to star in SABC 2’s highly anticipated upcoming telenovela, Pimville.

Tell us a bit about your role in Pimville?

Charmaine Mtinta: I will be portraying the role of Sis’ Aya, a motherly figure in the community, and I am just hoping that people will just enjoy it because we’re telling an authentic story about township life in Pimville. Without giving away too much, stay tuned on the 9th of February at 9pm!

What does it mean to you to continue your journey with the SABC after such a long and impactful relationship?

Clementine Mosimane: You know, I started on SABC 3 way back when. So, now coming onto SABC 2 as the relationship continues to grow, it has always felt like home. I am looking forward to what we have to share tonight and have hope that it will be stunning, and we deliver an experience that people can look forward to.

As the evening unfolded, guests were ushered into the main venue and welcomed by hosts Gail Mabalane (who will star alongside Clementine Mosimane and Charmaine Mtinta in Pimville) and Lorcia Cooper-Kumalo, set to appear in SABC 2’s newest drama, Paradys.

The duo set the tone for the night with warmth, laughter, and undeniable charm, prompting waves of applause after every announcement. Guests were introduced to the cast of the new teen variety show, Our Space, followed by a celebratory nod to the team behind the brand-new talk show, Eintlik Let’s Connect, co-hosted by the ever-sensational Penny Lebyane and Fran-Rio Lucas.

The evening also featured a special celebratory message from Nomsa Chabeli, Group CEO of the SABC, who reaffirmed that SABC 2 exists to speak directly to the heartbeat of everyday South Africa. This was followed by a message from SABC COO Lungile Binza, who emphasised that growth at the public broadcaster is never incidental, it is intentional. With a renewed focus on establishing a clear and meaningful role in the lives of South Africans, SABC 2 made it clear that this moment marks only the beginning.

“Tonight is not a scheduled event; it is a homecoming,” said Maijang Mpherwane, Group Executive of Video Entertainment at the SABC.

Last night’s gathering reaffirmed SABC 2’s role as a national unifier. At the heart of the channel lies a clear intent to serve its viewers, delivering content with substance while celebrating South Africa’s rich tapestry of generations and cultures. Grounded in culture, community, and public value, SABC 2’s commitment to relevance continues to define its purpose.
