Cosatu has submitted an urgent request to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to allow workers to access a portion of their retirement funds.
The trade union federation says this can be used as an income replacement for its members.
The union body’s request is contained in a formal letter sent to the minister.
Cosatu says many of its members aren’t receiving an income due to the lockdown and accessing this money is critical to their wellbeing.
It says the relief can be limited to no more than the equivalent of six months’ pay.
