The lockdown has worked for Gauteng and there’s been progress. This is according to Premier David Makhura. Gauteng currently has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases.
Makhura says the government will continue to ensure compliance to lockdown regulations especially since schools will be opening soon.
The Gauteng COVID-19 weekly update by Premier David Makhura shows that the province now leads with screening and contact tracing.
Although the number of infections has increased, there’s been progress from the beginning of the pandemic to now.
“More than 50% of confirmed cases confirmed in South Africa were in Gauteng. It’s also important to also just look up at the active cases. Gauteng has 8% of the national active cases so you would see that with regards to active cases we also have fewer percent,” said Makhura.
The new hotspots have been identified as not only the townships but also the CBD.
Ekurhuleni is also of great concern.
The MEC of Health, Bandile Masuku has detailed the new plans for the hotspots.
“The response team as establish will make sure that it supports the management, it supports the steering committee to ensure that we are able to resume the services of the facility at a stipulated time after decontamination,” he said.
But with the 1st of June being the first day of school, no schools will open without personal protective equipment. The cleaning process begins.
“We starting first with the classroom, for the classroom to be read it means it has to have the necessary PPE, the must be relevant social distancing, every learner must know where they sit and there must be a lesson before you enter into a classroom to observe the using of masks,” added MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi.
Lesufi says the school readiness document will be made available for public comment and suggestions.
