DJ and music producer Max Hurrell is at it again and we’re not mad. This time, Police Minister Bheki Cele was on his radar for a hot remix.
When Cele held a briefing on the adherence to lockdown regulations on Friday 22 May, we should have known that Hurrell would be brewing up a hit.
Around three weeks ago, Hurrell “remixed” the speech of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and boy, was Mzansi all over it. You recall “When People Zol?” – yes, we thought so.

When Cele speaks, we can — most of the time — expect the unexpected. On Friday, Cele dropped another bombshell. He said that smokers who light up outside of their houses should be able to provide receipts to show where they bought their cigarettes and if the purchase was indeed legal.
During the speech, he said police should know “where [you] got the cigarette” and “when [you] got the cigarette” because “buying the cigarette is illegal”.
Those words inspired Hurrell’s latest song and we are so here for it.
After Dlamini-Zuma’s infamous video, we wanted to know what her response to it would be and it’s the same sort of feeling with Cele. We want to know if he’ll respond to the song and what he’ll have to say. We hope he doesn’t classify this song as a contravention of lockdown regulations though.
When The South African last spoke to Hurrell and asked which minister he would like to make a song about next, he said there were so many and that he would keep an eye out. Let’s just say he didn’t disappoint.
