Background
Ezintsha is a group of South African academics and health professionals who work with partners around the world. We apply new technology to health-related problems, and work to extend access to effective drugs in order for quality health care and medicine to be provided to everyone. Ezintsha was formed in 2019 and is a sub-division of Wits Reproductive Health & HIV Institute, which is part of the University of the Witwatersrand, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The main purpose of the job
To recruit and provide outpatient medical care and treatment to clinical trial participants (HIV, COVID-19, NCDs) in designated facilities, and to provide technical advice and support such as training, mentoring, referrals, and data management.
Location – Johannesburg (Ezintsha sites)
Key performance areas include:
Examine, treat and refer participants according to research protocols and guidelines.
Ensure the inclusion of appropriate participants in clinical trials.
Treat opportunistic and sexually transmitted infections as diagnosed.
Prescribe appropriate treatments.
Report adverse events as per protocol, within applicable timelines.
Liaise with the laboratory regarding interpretation of laboratory results
Ensure appropriate management plans are followed for all abnormal lab results.
Conduct ward rounds to follow up admitted participants where possible.
Data collection and storage according to GCP and study SOPs.
Recruitment and retention according to set targets as required by sponsors.
Set up and maintenance of trial documentation.
Participate in the development and review of guidelines, SOPs and other research material.
Provide support to clinical staff to ensure high quality patient care
Assist in writing of grant proposals, concept notes, protocols and ethics applications for new research studies.
Implement research studies as part of a team.
Participate in ongoing mentorship programmes initiated by other EZINTSHA stakeholders
Compile reports on different aspects of clinical care, including adverse events, pregnancies etc
Capture data on CRFs and patient logs
Proactively resolve protocol queries and missing data
Participate in programme audits.
Compile and submit reports to Programme Managers for submission to donors.
Participate in compiling documents to showcase EZINTSHA’s work.
Attend meetings.
Act as a point of contact for the research site, partner organisations, donors and internally where appropriate.
Communicate with all levels of EZINTSHA staff around inputs and outputs.
Provide feedback to internal and external stakeholders where required.
Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management.
Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as conferences, workshops etc.
Required minimum education and training
MBBCh Degree or equivalent
Required minimum work experience
Minimum 2 years’ experience in Public Health
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
Certification in HIV Management
Clinical Research Experience would be an advantage.
Exceptional organizational and administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Ordered and systematic in approach to tasks.
Attention to detail. Pro-active, able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making.
Able to prioritise own workload and work towards deadlines.
Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Able to speak other African languages.
