Background
Ezintsha is a group of South African academics and health professionals who work with partners around the world. We apply new technology to health-related problems, and work to extend access to effective drugs in order for quality health care and medicine to be provided to everyone. Ezintsha was formed in 2019 and is a sub-division of Wits Reproductive Health & HIV Institute, which is part of the University of the Witwatersrand, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Main purpose of the job:
To effectively manage investigational and non-investigational medicines, label and dispense medication to study participants under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
Location – Johannesburg (Ezintsha sites)
Key performance areas include:
Ordering of stock from the main supplier or the pharmaceutical depot.
Receive stock and organize storage of medication on the shelves paying attention to batch numbers and expiry dates.
Store medication according to storage requirements and temperatures.
Perform temperature control daily for relevant medication.
Contact suppliers if equipment needs maintenance or repair.
Conduct weekly or bi-weekly stock takes and complete relevant inventory forms.
Check stock dates and if expired, remove from shelves for disposal.
Inform and advise the Pharmacist of stock to be ordered and stock rotations.
Complete and file all relevant forms and documentation
Receive prescriptions from the Research Nurse or Medical Officer.
Evaluate prescriptions for correctness against dosage chart.
Check expiry dates and batch number of medications before labelling and dispensing.
Interpret prescriptions and prepare medicine accordingly.
Prepare medication based on chronological expiry date to ensure usage before expiration date for dispensing.
Label medication for verification by Pharmacist.
Inform and advice patient or care givers on the use of medication in person or remotely using applicable digital platform.
Make referrals to Counsellors or Dietician as and when required.
Ensure chain of custody and temperature control when using medicine courier to deliver medicines
Entering of data on the pharmacy data system
Preparing of the monthly reports
Reporting system errors to the relevant authorities.
Comparison of Pharmacy data to the Clinic data Make referrals to Counsellors or Dietician as and when required.
Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.
Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as workshops, forums,conferences etc.
Participate and give input in ad hoc projects and initiatives
Required minimum education and training
Grade 12
Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant Certification
Required minimum work experience
2 years’ work experience as a Post Basic Pharmacist assistant in a Research or Hospital Environment
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities
Certification in basic HIV and good clinical practice.
Experience in adherence counseling when dispensing medication.
Good administration skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Ordered, systematic and analytical.
Assertive, confident, and adaptable.
Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.
Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Display a concern for patients and willingness to respond to patients’ needs and requirements.
