Mpumalanga records first COVID-19 death as toll rises to 998

Mpumalanga has recorded the province’s first COVID-19 related death. It said the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa has risen to 48,285.

The department has reported 46 new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total to 998.

The Western Cape recorded 45 new deaths and Mpumalanga one.

“We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased,” the department said.

Over 24,000 people have recovered so far, translating to a recovery rate of 50,5 percent according to the department.

The recovery rate was previously recorded as 52,8 percent.

A total of 920,064 tests have been conducted cumulatively of which 28,395 were conducted since the last report.
