Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku warned on Monday that the COVID-19 pandemic could soon worsen in the province.
The Gauteng Health Department says it’s concerned at the rising numbers of active COVID-19 cases.
Masuku said the low number of people needing hospitalization gives hope.
Makhura cautioned that Gauteng residents should brace themselves for a peak of infections.
The Premier said the storm of COVID-19 has arrived in Gauteng and will take all stakeholders to weather the storm.
The provincial government signed a multi-million rand project between it and car manufacturer BMW aimed at curbing and managing the spread of the virus.
It involves the upgrading of eight hospitals across three provinces as well as four community clinics.
Makhura thanked BMW, saying the resources will help to expand the number of beds by over 700, as well as increase PPE.
Thank you @BMW_SA & the Federal Government of Germany for coming on board to compliment our efforts in fighting COVID-19 in Gauteng. The resources will help us expand the number of beds by over 700, as well as increase our PPE. This is the armory we need to fight this pandemic. pic.twitter.com/UDWQW1UANi
