SA lockdown – Ban on sale of tobacco fight in court

The fight over the continued ban on the sale of tobacco products will be heard in the High court in Pretoria.

The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association wants the decision to prohibit the sale of cigarettes declared irrational.

It argues government regulations were implemented arbitrarily.

The ban on the sale of tobacco products was implemented when the country entered level five of the lockdown in March.

It still remains under alert level three.

President Cyril Ramaphosa had initially announced the ban would be lifted, but the decision was later revoked.
