Western Cape preparing for more COVID-19 testing sites

The Western Cape Health Department is planning to open 18 more COVID-19 triage and testing sites. The province has the highest number of cases and deaths in the country.

A site was opened at Groote Schuur Hospital last week. Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo says these sites should ease the load on overburdened hospitals. Groote Schuur Hospital currently has 975 beds and added 320 beds for COVID-19 patients.

The hospital has also downscaled its theatre activities to accommodate coronavirus cases. The hospital says its mortality rates are relatively low.

The health department says it’s making good progress in setting up facilities. The department said its additional intermediate bed facilities are for those who are not well enough to be at home, but not sick enough to be admitted to hospital.
