COVID-19 in SA: Confirmed cases rise to 287 796

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the COVID-19 surge is expected in July and August.

He says it’s coming at a slower pace but failing to adhere to regulations will increase the rate.

This as the confirmed number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa rose to 287,796.

Gauteng has become the coronavirus epicentre with the province recording 103,713 infections and 644 deaths.

Mkhize said the rapid daily increase in cases is concerning.

“The sudden increase is what really shocked the system,” Mkhize said.

“We must always stay ahead of the curve.”

The department reported a further 93 COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total to 4,172.

Six deaths were reported in KwaZulu- Natal, 11 in Mpumalanga, 16 in the Free State, 37 in the Western Cape and 23 in the Eastern Cape.

The total number of tests conducted to date is 2,194,624 with 40,233 new tests conducted since the last report.

The number of recoveries is 138,241.
